FAQ

What is physical therapy?

  • Therapeutic exercise and functional training are the cornerstones of physical therapy. Depending on the particular needs of a patient, physical therapists may "manipulate" a joint (that is, perform certain types of passive movements at the end of the patient's range of motion) or massage a muscle to promote proper movement and function. Physical therapists may use other techniques such as electrotherapy, ultrasound (high-frequency waves that produce heat), hot packs, and ice in addition to other treatments when appropriate.

  • The individualized, "hands on" approach that characterizes physical therapy is highly valued by patients. When a physical therapist sees a patient for the first time, he or she examines that individual and develops a plan of care that promotes the ability to move, reduces pain, restores function, and prevents disability. The physical therapist and the patient then work side-by-side to make sure that the goals of the treatment plan are met.

Do I need a script from a doctor for physical therapy?

  • In Nebraska, a script is not necessary to receive physical therapy services. However, because Columbus Physical Therapy, P.C. believes in a comprehensive plan of care, a phone call will be made to your primary care physician to communicate the proposed treatment plan and to ensure that a contributing health factor does not exist that may compromise the results of your therapy. It is also important to note that some insurance companies require that a physician prescription be on file in order to receive payment on claims.

How much does an appointment cost?

  • Fees will depend on what is included in your prescribed plan of care. We strive to give our patients the necessary treatment regardless of the type of insurance coverage in force. We encourage patients to call us with questions regarding insurance coverage and benefits.

What do I need to wear?

  • Comfortable clothing and shoes. If you are coming to therapy directly from work we have the necessary clothing on hand in order to be comfortable. If you would prefer bringing a change of clothes, we have private treatment rooms available for your change prior to treatment.

Will patients be expected to disrobe for any part of their treatment?

  • In some cases, a patient is asked to change into a gown, similar to what you might wear at your primary care physician's office or hospital in order to provide effective treatment and protect the patient's clothing.

How long will each treatment last?

  • Your first appointment is typically 45-60 minutes long and each following appointment is typically 30-45 minutes long, depending on your prescribed plan of care.

How many visits will it take me to feel better?

  • This will depend on your diagnosis, prognosis and condition at the time you begin therapy. Typically physicians will prescribe 2-3 times per week for 4-6 weeks. Some degenerative, surgery-related or chronic conditions may require more visits, the number is usually identified in your prescription.

Can I make payments?

  • Columbus Physical Therapy, P.C. will verify your insurance coverage for you. As part of our "feel good experience," we will do everything possible to accommodate each individual treated at our facility. We will be more than happy to help patients gain a clearer understanding of their insurance coverage and payment procedures.
